Lord Shiva is one of the most revered manifestations of the Supreme Divine in Hindu philosophy. He represents the eternal principle of transformation, dissolution and spiritual liberation. Shiva is also known as Mahadeva, the Great God, and is worshipped as the embodiment of supreme consciousness, compassion, wisdom and inner strength. In the philosophy of Parabrahma, Shiva represents the divine presence that transcends form, name and limitation.
Lord Shiva is traditionally associated with the destruction of ignorance, ego and negative tendencies. His divine form reminds devotees that everything in the universe is temporary and that the ultimate reality lies beyond the material world. Through devotion, meditation and self-realisation, a seeker moves towards the understanding that the individual self and the Supreme Consciousness are ultimately one.
At Vethalamkunnu Parabrahma Temple, the spiritual presence of Lord Shiva is believed to be predominant on the main sacred hill. The naturally formed sanctum, ancient trees, sacred groves, stone lamps and peaceful surroundings create a unique atmosphere for prayer and meditation. Along with the presence of Shiva, devotees also recognise the sacred presence of Bhadrakali and Yogeeshwara.
The circumambulation of the main sacred hill has special spiritual significance here. Devotees traditionally complete the circumambulation in 108 steps while chanting the sacred Shiva Panchakshara Mantra, “Om Namah Shivaya.” It is believed that completing this sacred journey around the naturally formed sanctum carries the spiritual merit associated with the darshan of 108 Shiva temples.
The presence of Shiva at Vethalamkunnu is therefore experienced not merely as a traditional form of worship, but as a journey towards inner peace and spiritual awakening. Devotees come with their prayers, hopes and difficulties, surrendering them to the divine presence of Mahadeva. In the sacred atmosphere of Vethalamkunnu, Shiva is experienced as the eternal consciousness that connects nature, humanity and the entire universe with the supreme reality of Parabrahma.
